If you’re on the path toward recovery, you know how trying it can be. Addiction can hold a strong grip and even little things can trigger urges. You may find certain people, environments or memories will trigger you to want to pick the substance back up. However, you need to find your strength and continue onward. You need to look for inspiration to keep moving forward.
One of the things you can do is post quotes in highly visible areas to help you when you need it most. You could print these out or write them down on a whiteboard or chalkboard that you’ll see often. You can also try a dry erase marker on your mirror or write them on post-it notes and place them around your home or work area.
1. “Let your hopes, not your hurts, shape your future.” – Robert H. Schuller
2. “Recovery is an ongoing process, for both the addict and his or her family. In recovery, there is hope. And hope is a wonderful thing.” – Dean Dauphinais
3. “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot
4. “When everything seems like an uphill struggle, just think of the view from the top.” – Unknown
5. “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” – C.S. Lewis
6. “Every day is a fresh start.” – Unknown
7. “Recovery is not a race. You don’t have to feel guilty if it takes you longer than you thought it would.” – Unknown
8. “If things go wrong, don’t go with them.” – Roger Babson
9. “You were never created to live defeated, guilty, condemned, ashamed or unworthy. You were created to be victorious.” – Unknown
10. “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
If any of these quotes stood out to you, write them down so you can have them available when you need a reminder. The road may be difficult, but you can do this and the work will be more than worth the effort.
